Landfall
Remembering Fiona
"As I stepped out of my apartment on that first day after the storm, I realized that the world as we know it is changing fast. The devastation to our landscape was very hard to absorb and remains that way. However, on the upside, I saw so much kindness. Neighbours helping neighbours. Reminded me of why I stay on this beautiful island - the people. Beautiful people who are always there to help each other.
I felt relieved and very thankful that the only thing that my mom and I had to deal with was the loss of power. I spent the night being terrified and very afraid, and it takes a lot to scare me. As I surveyed the devastation, I felt so grateful that we were safe, but so sad for all the people who had lost so much. We had days of anxiety, hoping all our Island people were all safe and wondering if this is the new normal for us.

I felt very grateful for the 'Island Way.' We are always there for each other and my spirits lighten reading story after story of people helping each other through this experience.

The biggest message I received from all this was that we are never alone on this Island. "

As the first anniversary of Hurricane Fiona approached, I reached out to Islanders, asking them to recall what they saw and how they felt when they emerged after the storm. Their responses inspired me to do some artmaking that reflects our shared hurricane experience. I blended these elements within a small flip book meant to encourage further reflection and conversation among Islanders.
You can view the flipbook here:
"A mesmerizing collection of art pieces that resonate with our collective resilience and strength in the face of adversity."
